This website is devoted to the tribal art of Indonesia. It showcases objects from a collection which my wife Rachel and I have built up over many years. Authentic tribal art from every culture is both powerful and expressive. Indonesian tribal art is no different in this respect from the better known artistic traditions of Africa and Oceania.
The majority of modern Indonesians are descendants of the ancient Austronesians who migrated from Taiwan to South East Asia as early as 2500 BC, and later spread to Melanesia and as far as Micronesia. Austronesian culture places a high value on cultural continuity. Honoring ancestors is the Austronesian way of obtaining blessings and protection from malign spirits that roam the world that humans inhabit. Ancestral veneration is manifest in figural sculptures of deceased family members, leaders of the community and mythical ancestors of lore. These sculptures, the best of which are outstanding works of art, are rendered mostly but not exclusively in wood. But whether the ancestral images are expressed in wood, jewelry or textiles, all serve to remind the people of their origins.
This website is primarily intended to be a digital record of our collecting odyssey as well as a virtual gallery for others to enjoy. The collection features figural art, utilitarian items, jewelry and textiles from virtually all the major islands of the Indonesian archipelago. We have chosen all objects for their aesthetic qualities but every piece is also imbued with a cultural heritage that harks back to the first maritime voyage of the Austronesian peoples.
