The concept of the soul transiting to the upper world recurs through Indonesia tribal culture. Batak funeral ceremonies are elaborate affairs that last for many days. Actual soul boats measuring up to 2 meters long are made for the procession ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, they are destroyed by the spectators as a form of ‘closure’. This model of a soul boat has a male and female paddler. The boat’s surface is painted black and yellow, characteristic colors used in actual soul boats. Ex. Mark Johnson.
