Canoes are an important means for transporting crops and fishing in Mentawai island, southern Sumatra. Floats made of very light wood are used to tie nets to prevent them from sinking and to signal when prey is caught. This float shows a human figure wearing a tall headdress and is carved in a minimalist form. The natural way in which the arms reach to touch the knees attests to the great skill of the artist. It also reflects Mentawain pride in making all objects aesthetically beautiful, whether they are for ceremonial or daily use.
