The Lio people forms the main ethnic group living in the Ende district of central Flores. This Lio sarong (known as lawo luka semba) belongs to a family of high status. It consists of three large bands, and features a complex of imagery rendered in light- and reddish-brown on a black background. Archaic “stick” figures with raised hands occupy the large central band. Each figure is flanked by three horse motifs. The upper and lower bands have similar designs comprising five rows of geometric motifs. Groups of cosmic trees running through the length of one side of the cloth. All motifs are executed with great clarity. In an excellent state of preservation.
